Hudson Institute and Monash University have welcomed the announcement of the Financial Markets Foundation for Children (FMFC) to provide funding for the appointment of a new Chair in Neonatal Paediatrics.
The Chair, who will be a full professor of the University and a member of the Department of Paediatrics in the School of Clinical Sciences, will be responsible for leadership and strategic development of neonatal paediatric academic research. The position will sit across The Ritchie Centre at Hudson Institute, led by Professor Stuart Hooper, the largest perinatal research centre in Australia, and Monash Children’s Hospital, at Monash Health.
Professor Katrina Williams, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, said, “the appointment will build on existing excellence in discovery science, clinical research, healthcare and training to improve the health of high risk children now and into the future.”
With a world class neo-natal unit, the largest in Victoria, Monash Children’s Hospital provides care to babies with a broad range of issues including prematurity, as well as paediatric surgical services.
Dr Alice Stewart, Service Director in Monash Newborn, said, “with a large number of engaged clinician researchers and nicely established links with The Ritchie Centre, a new Chair in neonatal paediatrics will enable us to build on these synergies and become world leading in terms of neonatal research”.
“Our goal is to achieve the best outcomes for babies, so by increasing the quality improvement focus within the unit and looking at the benchtop and clinical research and what that tells us – we can then translate that into achieving those outcomes” said Professor Stuart Hooper.
