Mary Mansilla, PhD student in the Centre for Reproductive Health, was nominated and shortlisted for the 2019 Glen Eira Young Citizen of the Year Award for her extensive youth mental health advocacy with Headspace Elsternwick and Headspace Bentleigh, her outstanding contributions to the City of Glen Eira community and her resilience in the pursuit of her education.
The awards, which were presented as part of Council’s Community Awards 2019 event on 22 May, recognise residents and community groups in the City of Glen Eira who have significantly contributed to the local community.
Twenty-six individuals and community groups were nominated for Citizen, Young Citizen and Community Group of the Year.
Mary attended the Council Awards Dinner on 22 May, and although she didn’t win, she was honoured to be shortlisted and invited.
“I am incredibly grateful to be acknowledged for my work in engaging, educating and empowering other young people to be agents for positive change. Youth mental health matters, young futures matter,” Mary said.
Headspace is a one-stop-shop for young people (aged 12 to 25) who need help with mental, physical and sexual health, and other services.
